Notre Dame football: Instant reactions as Irish blow out Rice at home

Notre Dame football played a complete game against Rice in its 2026 home opener, dominating from start to finish en route to a 52-0 blowout victory.

The Irish jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, playing at a level that looked like an elite effort. It very much seems like a slow start in the first half against Wisconsin is way behind Notre Dame, as they’ve look like a different team the last six quarters.

Actually, they look exactly like how we all envisioned during the offseason, and it’s great to see that come to fruition. There wasn’t much to complain about today, as here are some instant reactions to Notre Dame blowing out Rice.

No issues in home opener for Notre Dame

There was some concern about the recent history of Irish game two opponents, and that issues was quickly resolved. Notre Dame wasted no time taking control of this game, jumping out to a 21-point lead after the first quarter. Domination from both sides of the ball.

The fast start we all wanted Notre Dame to have

Many had been asked to see the Irish dominate out of the gate, and that’s exactly what they did. A scoop and score, then a short field touchdown gave Notre Dame a 14-0 lead 4:30 into the game, and it was pretty much over. Establishing dominance over an inferior opponent hasn’t been easy at times for the Irish, but it was today. It’s always a good sign to lead 21-0 after one quarter of play.

Notre Dame safety Adon Shuler was all over the field

Elite play for the safety today, as we knew he wouldn’t get many chances to play pass attempts. Shuler came downhill with violent intentions multiple times, forcing a fumble on a tackle-for-loss. Even if he didn’t make the tackle, he was making an impact on the play. Exceptional showing from the star safety.

Notre Dame WR Jordan Faison is breaking out

We all knew that Faison had the talent, but also playing lacrosse took time away from training for football. He’s not doing both anymore, and it looks like it’s paying off. Faison is constantly open, has sure hands, and is a threat to take any punt to the house. His emergence is huge for CJ Carr.

Efficient, command, excellent. Carr showed why he’s viewed as a top draft prospect, completing 16 of his 20 attempts for 253-yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. His command of the offense was top notch, checking in and out of the right plays. Hard to have any complaints about Carr’s performance on Saturday.

Excellent total effort from Notre Dame

When you looked at this game on paper, this is the kind of outcome you’d expect, and while we didn’t think this one would be as non-competitive as it was, the Irish did what they were supposed to. Offense moved the ball with ease, the defense controlled every drive. It’s hard not to be impressed with what we saw Saturday afternoon, as this is what a championship team looks like considering the opponent.
