Oklahoma State pulled off the biggest upset of the early 2026 college football season on Saturday, knocking off No. 6 Oregon 39-31 in Stillwater. The Cowboys entered the matchup as 23 1/2-point underdogs after losing 24-10 to Tulsa in new head coach Eric Morris’ debut and being beaten 69-3 by the Ducks last season.
The win was Morris’ first at Oklahoma State and ended a couple of lengthy losing streaks. The Cowboys snapped a 12-game overall skid that stretched across two seasons and a 21-game losing streak against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. Their previous FBS victory came against the Golden Hurricanes on Sept. 14, 2024. Oklahoma State also improved to 31 straight wins in home openers.
Following the dramatic win, Morris joked that he might have already reached the high point of his tenure with the Cowboys.

“I don’t know if I can top this,” said Morris. “I’m not going to retire, but I might think about it tonight.”
Morris took over the program after Oklahoma State went 1-11 in 2025, a season that ended Mike Gundy’s tenure. The Cowboys then opened 2026 with a two-touchdown loss at Tulsa before responding against an Oregon team that had been ranked No. 2 in the preseason.
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker played a central role in the turnaround. The transfer from North Texas, where he played for Morris last season, recorded 317 passing yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards and another score. He overcame two interceptions on tipped passes and helped Oklahoma State finish with 554 total yards, nearly double the Ducks’ 281.
The Cowboys led 24-17 at halftime after outgaining Oregon 353-101. The Ducks moved ahead 31-30 early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Dante Moore threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Evan Stewart. Mestemaker then directed a 75-yard response, finishing the drive by powering through defenders on a 10-yard touchdown run with 4 1/2 minutes remaining.
Oklahoma State failed on the ensuing two-point attempt, but kicker Sam Keltner later converted his fourth field goal after the defense stopped Oregon on downs, securing the 39-31 win.
The Cowboys will next host Murray State on Saturday, Sept. 19.
