What Oklahoma State football players, coach thought of fans storming field vs Oregon

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State receiver Wyatt Young took a knee and smiled for the camera. 

With a crowd of sweaty, jubilant OSU fans crowding around him, he posed with a beaming girl just barely shorter than him, even at half his height.

After a 39-31 win against No. 6 Oregon, OSU fans stormed Boone Pickens Stadium and tore down a goalpost. They sang the alma mater, passed the uprights overhead to start their journey to Theta Pond and grabbed selfies with Cowboys.

“It was awesome,” Young said. “I’ve never experienced anything like that and it feels great to give these fans a real W for them because it’s been a long time for them. It just felt great in that moment so I’ll take any pictures I have to.”

First-year OSU head coach Eric Morris had a chaotic postgame sequence following his first home win. He got a look at how strong his security is.

“That was crazy,” Morris said. “When I was surrounded by police officers after I shook hands with Coach (Dan) Lanning and they started rushing me off the field for an ESPN interview, and boy, they were taking people out left and right. Now, hats off to those guys. Some of the hardest hits I saw today were our loyal officers taking people out, getting me to the tunnel to do an interview. I didn’t get to witness the actual on-the-field [chaos]; I saw it as chaos around me. But happy for our fans, right? I mean, long time coming, and we’ll find some new field goals. We have a great ag(riculture) department here. They could probably weld them right now as we speak, right?”

OSU running back Caleb Hawkins stormed the field as a fan after OSU’s 2023 Bedlam win. He said he barely escaped getting hit by the goal post the students ripped down that day.

“It was unbelievable,” Hawkins said. “I can’t even wrap my head around it right now. I’m still picturing myself. I found my brother (Tyson) really, really quick. He got there really fast. He was on a visit to watch us today. I just hugged him. I was so beyond thankful for the atmosphere that they brought.” 

Senior OSU defensive end James Williams, a Nebraska and Florida State transfer, is a field storm veteran. 

“That's my third field storm that I've been a part of, and it gets better every time,” Williams said. “You know because that's a moment you're never going to forget about. It's a moment that everybody in that stadium is not going to forget about. Like that invokes Oklahoma State beating Oklahoma for the last time. You know what I mean? Like that, that's a memory that every single kid that's in that stadium is going to cherish.”

Linebacker Ethan Wesloski led the Cowboys with nine tackles against Oregon. 

“That was surreal,” Wesloski said. “You dream about that stuff as a kid, right? I remember being 8, 9 years old watching the Texas guys play and just seeing how fast they were, how much fun they had. That’s when I really fell in love with football right there. It was just awesome to see this crowd come alive. We always knew we could win this game. We knew it was gonna come down to us. To have those guys behind us, it was awesome.”
