PAC-12 Players of the Week: Week 2

Week two is over and impressive performances were everywhere in an exciting week of college football. We saw some strong offensive performances, dominant defensive performances, and game-changing special teams plays. Let’s take a look at the top performers from this past weekend.

Offensive Player of the Week

Dylan Riley (Boise State)

There were a lot of really good offensive performances this week. I went with Riley because he did it on a big stage and his team came away with the victory. Riley carried the ball 19 times for 206 yards and caught 2 passes for 11 yards. Riley and the Broncos controlled the lion’s share of scrimmage. It was a dominant performance by the Broncos rushing attack.

Also considered: Braden Atkinson (Oregon State) had 399 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. Jess Legree (Oregon State) had 240 yards receiving on 8 receptions. Hauss Hejny (Colorado State) had 325 yards passing and 85 yards rushing. Mel Brown (Colorado State) had 9 rushes for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Week

Jaylen Thomas (Washington State)

Thomas was the lone bright spot for a Cougar team that was absolutely decimated by Kansas State. Thomas intercepted two passes, one that was returned for a touchdown that was the only score for Washington State. Thomas also had four tackles, making him the clear choice for defensive player of the week.

Also considered: Travis Anderson (Boise State) had an interception and 5 tackles. Jayden Bradley (Texas State) had 13 tackles. Mike Lindsay (San Diego State) had an interception and 3 tackles.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Cam Bates (Boise State)

After Jeremyah Lane fumbled a punt, Bates came in and took his first punt return to the house. The 72-yard punt return was a massive play that shifted control to the Broncos. Bates will likely be the primary punt returner moving forward and if Boise State can continue to have outstanding special teams play, they will continue to be heavy favorites in the PAC-12.

Also considered: Jacob Bonilla (Texas State) made both field goal attempts, including a long of 51 yards.

Freshman of the Week

Jesse Legree (Oregon State)

Legree was outstanding against Texas Tech. He looked uncoverable and has been Braden Atkinson’s favorite target through two weeks. Legree had 8 receptions for 240 yards and two touchdowns in Oregon State’s 35-24 loss to Texas Tech. Through two games, Legree has 13 receptions for 376 yards. The talented freshman isn’t just looking like one of the best wide receivers in the PAC-12, he is looking like one of the best wide receivers in the nation.

Also considered: Rasean Jones who had 3 receptions for 61 yards and 2 rushes for 19 yards.
