After back-to-back losses to open the season, the Rutgers football program is not in a good place, to say the least. And it’s only made worse by poor quarterback play and, most recently, an injury to original starter Dylan Lonergan.
During a two-touchdown, three-interception performance against UMass, which pulled off a massive upset over the Scarlet Knights in Week 1, Lonergan exited the game late with an undisclosed injury. He then did not dress for Rutgers’ 28-21 loss to Boston College, his former school, on Friday. AJ Surace started in his place, throwing three touchdowns and four interceptions.
Now, with two losses out of conference, Rutgers is set to begin Big Ten play this weekend against 12th-ranked USC. It remains to be seen which Knights quarterback will get the nod, as On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Lonergan, whose injury has still not been revealed, is “viewed as week-to-week.”

If Lonergan, who began his career at Alabama before transferring to Boston College before last season, is unable to go against the Trojans, it would appear that Surace would continue to start, considering head coach Greg Schiano’s statement that he believes “we can win with these quarterbacks.”
Surace is a New Jersey native who is in his third year at Rutgers. After not playing as a freshman, Surace saw action in three games last season. Through two games this year, he is 24 of 36 for 307 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions.
Rutgers, which has never had a winning record in Big Ten play, opened as a 25.5-point underdog for this weekend’s home game vs. USC. The Trojans have defeated San Jose State, Fresno State, and, this past weekend, Louisiana to earn their 3-0 record.
Kickoff for Rutgers-USC is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
