The Oklahoma offense struggled to move the ball on Saturday as they lost to Michigan, 17-10. Oklahoma’s head coach was honest about John Mateer’s performance in the loss.
Now, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle is under the spotlight and is facing job security questions, per Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.
“Oklahoma OC Ben Arbuckle, asked if he’s coaching for his job: ‘I haven’t thought about that one bit.’ Said he’s completely focused on the players and how to maximize their abilities in games,” Rittenberg posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Oklahoma was just 3-13 on third down on offense, while also amassing just 289 yards. Further, they ran for just 100 yards on 29 attempts. Of the 100 yards, 45 of them came from the quarterback. Regardless, the analyst Max Olson noted that maybe the offense should be looked at.
“I went back and looked and this is just what they’ve been under (offensive coordinator) Ben Arbuckle,” Olson said. “That was the ninth time in 15 games that their running backs combined for less than 70 rushing yards. And that’s… no Power Four team has more in that span since the start of ’25, although Alabama is close, which is also bizarre.”
The Sooners have a week to work on their offense, facing New Mexico in Week 3, and they need to find their identity quickly.
“Identity wise, it feels like they’re kind of right back to where they were last year even when Mateer was banged up a little bit,” Olson said. “I know (Michael) Fasusi was out on the offensive line and that causes some problems, but there’s not a lot to love even if they’ve picked up some new pieces like Rocky Beers and Trell Harris and all those guys. There’s not a lot to love about what they’re putting out on offense yesterday.”
Currently, Oklahoma is still a top-25 team in the nation. If the Sooners do not figure out their offense, it could lead to them dropping out of the top 25 and the playoff race. After facing New Mexico, the Sooners visit Georgia and then face off with Texas.
