No. 5 UM's Offensive Star Duo Top Heisman Trophy Fan Votes

MIAMI, Fla. – The first ballot of Heisman Trophy fan votes was released on Tuesday and the No. 5 Miami Hurricanes’ offensive star duo were among the top recipients.

Quarterback Darian Mensah finished third with 315 total points. In the first two games of the 2026 college football season, he’s completed 41 of 45 passes (91.1 percent) and thrown for 653 yards and eight touchdowns. Mensah has yet to play in a fourth quarter as the Hurricanes beat Stanford and Florida A&M by an average win margin of 54.5 points.

The 21-year-old has been remarkably accurate and the offense continues to catch fire. However, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Last season, Mensah led the Atlantic Coast Conference, throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns at Duke. He helped the Blue Devils claim their first ACC title since 1989.

Mensah joined the Hurricanes through the transfer portal and was immediately surrounded by high-quality weapons from the wideouts to the backfield. He has the arm and supporting cast to continue carving out a Heisman Trophy campaign.

Finishing at the very top of the fan voting was college football rising star and wide receiver Malachi Toney with 549 points. He’s caught 16 passes for 330 yards and scored four touchdowns, thus far. Like Mensah, Toney has yet to play a fourth quarter.

The 18-year-old sophomore made a statement against Stanford. Toney broke Eddie Brown’s 42-year-old program record for the most receiving yards in a single game. He caught 12 passes for 234 yards and scored three touchdowns. Brown had 220 against the Boston College Eagles on Nov. 23, 1984.

After each touchdown, Toney hit the Heisman Trophy pose.

The last member of the Coral Gables program to be a finalist for the award was quarterback Cam Ward in 2023 – finished fourth in voting. Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992) are the only Hurricanes in history to win it.

It’s still early, but Mensah and Toney could be the next duo to make a push for the Heisman Trophy. Last season, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith finished in the top 10 in voting. However, both Mensah and Toney could receive invitations to the New York City ceremony.

The Hurricanes will face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons this Friday at North Carolina. It will be another opportunity for Mensah and Toney to connect and keep building chemistry. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. E.T. and will be televised on ESPN.
