Offensive keys to a UNC football victory in 2026 ACC opener

Two tests, two wins. After a close upset and blowout victory, the North Carolina Tar Heels are well-prepared heading into their ACC football opener.

On Saturday at 12 p.m., UNC (2-0) will face Clemson in Death Valley. North Carolina's shocking, 15-10 win over TCU got people talking, then a 35-3 domination of ETSU confirmed this team's depth.

The Tigers (1-1), initially projected to be a conference dark horse, are instead scrambling for answers. Clemson played arguably the most embarrassing game of head coach Dabo Swinney's career in Week One, losing via a 51-10 mark in Baton Route. Despite beating Georgia Southern and former Tar Heels quarterback Max Johnson last weekend, the Tigers struggled and showcased themselves as a fraction of that once-ACC contender.

Though UNC's defense is amongst the nation's top units, a much-improved offense is something fans should take note of. North Carolina landed a new offensive coordinator in Bobby Petrino whom, despite a rough 2025 in Arkansas, had the Razorbacks amongst the nation's top offenses.

The Tar Heels have an experienced quarterback in Billy Edwards, who played at previous Power Four stops in Maryland and Wisconsin. UNC's pass-catching corps now has a true TE1 in Ohio State transfer Jelani Thurman. North Carolina rolls three running backs deep. Even with an offensive line that faced questions entering 2026, the Tar Heels are allowing time for plays to develop.

The verdict is still out on Clemson's defense, which allowed 600+ yards at LSU, but limited Georgia Southern (1-1) under 300 yards. As the Tar Heels prepare for their first trip to Memorial Stadium since 2023, let's dive deeper into five offensive keys for a statement win.

Play turnover-free football

If you win the turnover battle, you're very likely going to win a football game. UNC held onto the football throughout their blowout victory vs. ETSU, while forcing the Buccaneers into two mishaps.

North Carolina turned the ball over twice against TCU, putting its upset bid in jeopardy. Luckily, the Tar Heels have one of the country's top defenses.

Clemson may be a fraction of the National Championship team it once was, but Clemson will also play in their home stadium Saturday, with a noise level capable of making anyone commit silly mistakes. If UNC doesn't turn the ball over in Death Valley, there's a 3-0 start coming back to Chapel Hill.

Continue finishing long drives

North Carolina scored five touchdown vs. ETSU. Two of those scoring drives started deep in Tar Heel territory, but both of those ended in seven points.

UNC marched the entire field on its second scoring drive, rolling 99 yards in 10 plays. On its final scoring drive, North Carolina marched 92 yards in 10 plays again.

The Tar Heels won't start every drive deep in their own territory on Saturday, but if they do, points need to be at the end of those.

Feed Demon June early and often

How about a career high three touchdowns? UNC sophomore running back Demon June did exactly that vs. ETSU, scoring three times on just seven carries.

When June had big games in 2025, his usage appeared to dip the next outing. North Carolina may very well have a similar game plan for their big-play back against Clemson.

Running back is a deep position for the Tar Heels, who also have fellow touchdown-scorers Jaylen McGill and Benjamin Hall in the room. If UNC rides the hot hand in June this weekend, 3-0 becomes much more of a possibility.

Continue spreading the football around to different pass-catchers

When you force opposing defenses to guess who's catching the football, your offense is able to flow pretty smoothly.

North Carolina did exactly that against ETSU, with quarterbacks Billy Edwards and Miles O'Neill completing passes to 11 different pass-catchers.

Clemson allowed Georgia Southern to throw for 244 yards a week ago, with LSU torching the Orange Tiger defense for 335 yards in Week One.
