LSU Faces Major Quarterback Crisis Before Massive No. 8 Ole Miss Game

LSU Tigers quarterback Sam Leavitt has been listed as doubtful for Saturday’s game against No. 8 Ole Miss. The Tigers are set to open SEC play in Oxford, Mississippi.
Leavitt has started LSU’s first two games this season, helping the Tigers open with a 2-0 record. His absence would leave LSU looking to another quarterback against Ole Miss.
Sam Leavitt remains doubtful for LSU’s SEC opener
LSU listed Leavitt as doubtful on its first injury report for the matchup. He has started both games this season as the Tigers opened with a 2-0 record.
Leavitt’s latest game came against Louisiana Tech last Saturday in a 45-14 LSU win. He completed 25 of 38 passes for 344 yards and one touchdown. He also threw three interceptions in the game.
The injury report does not list a specific injury for Leavitt. Reports have indicated that he is dealing with soreness in his throwing shoulder and has been limited in practice this week. He also missed his scheduled media availability Tuesday.
Leavitt transferred to LSU from Arizona State after helping the Sun Devils reach the College Football Playoff in 2024. His 2025 season ended early because of a Lisfranc foot injury that required surgery. He returned this season and became LSU’s starting quarterback.
A report from Yahoo Sports stated: “LSU listed starting QB Sam Leavitt as doubtful ahead of its matchup with No. 8 Ole Miss on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Husan Longstreet is in line to start if Leavitt is unable to play.”
The report puts Longstreet in position to make his first start for LSU if Leavitt is unavailable. The redshirt freshman has already appeared for the Tigers this season, but his experience remains limited. A start against Ole Miss would give him his first extended opportunity with LSU.
LSU has two options if Sam Leavitt cannot play
LSU has two quarterbacks available behind Leavitt: Husan Longstreet and Landen Clark. Longstreet is a redshirt freshman who transferred to LSU from USC. He appeared in four games for USC before joining the Tigers and had limited playing time.
Longstreet has made a brief appearance for LSU this season, completing his only pass attempt for 33 yards.
Clark is another option for LSU at quarterback. He has completed seven of 10 passes for 109 yards and one touchdown this season. He has also rushed for 42 yards and one touchdown.
LSU will play No. 8 Ole Miss on Saturday, September 19, at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. CT and will be LSU’s first SEC game of the season. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin will face his former team, Ole Miss, when the Tigers open conference play.
Leavitt’s final status has not been confirmed, and LSU is expected to provide more information on his condition as Saturday approaches. A decision could come before kickoff. If he is unable to play, Husan Longstreet and Landen Clark are available to step in at quarterback.
