Ahead of their ACC football opener at Clemson on Saturday, the North Carolina Tar Heels are, once again, the talk of college football.
UNC (2-0) will be playing its third straight game without Steve Belichick, who resigned from his position of defensive coordinator on Thursday. On the field, North Carolina is expected to face true freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds, who played most of the Tigers' (1-1) Week Two, 22-9 win over Georgia Southern.
Clemson entered 2026 with longtime backup Christopher Vizzina under center, but ineffectiveness and now an injury have him as backup. During recently media availability, Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick spoke on the challenges of facing either quarterback.
“I think in a way, they’re both similar," Belichick said. "They both can run the ball and they have quarterback runs incorporated in their offense. They did against LSU, so we know that they would do it with both guys. I think that the offense is going to be the offense. But again, I’m sure that whoever they feel the most confident with, I guess Tait in this case, that’s who we’re going to have to be ready for. I don’t think the offense is going to change too dramatically with either player. I’d say their skills are within a range of similarity.”
Reynolds began his freshman campaign in late relief of Vizzina during a life-draining, 51-10 loss at LSU in Week Zero, completing 4-of-6 passes for 22 yards, while being sacked three times. Reynolds fared much better against Georgia Southern, completing 16-of-27 passes for 178 yards, while running 14 times for 38 additional yards.
Vizzina patiently waited his turn behind Cade Klubnik in 2024 and 2025, but now he's watching from the Tiger sidelines. As Belichick noted earlier this week, UNC needs to be prepared for both Clemson QBs on Saturday.
