LSU football enters its most hostile venue yet on Saturday in Oxford. Ole Miss already is placing tight restrictions on Tiger fans. Which emboldens the deep enmity this Rebels fanbase has for the most high-profile returner to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium: Lane Kiffin.
College football insider for ESPN Pete Thamel painted a vivid picture of what to expect via The Pat McAfee Show Thursday.
“I think this is the most anticipated atmosphere in the 20+ years that I’ve done this in terms of just pure unadulterated hatred,” Thamel shared. I don’t think there’s ever been a scenario where there’s 1 singular figure who has been as hated as Lane Kiffin is in Oxford. His departure pierced the soul of the school, community and entire state.”

Thamel stated how Kiffin’s departure dragged out “was a big, giant mess.” Especially with Kiffin putting together a College Football Playoff run for the first time in Rebels program history.
Kiffin attempted to stick with Ole Miss before officially being sworn in as LSU head coach back in Nov. 2026. But fans and the college football nation saw it as Kiffin bolting for a rival neighbor. And exiting amid the Rebels becoming a national title contender. Ole Miss ultimately stretched its season to the CFP semifinals under Kiffin’s replacement Pete Golding.
Now Golding becomes the more beloved coaching figure in Oxford. He also has returning quarterback Trinidad Chambliss to unleash in front of the ex-head coach. Meanwhile, Ole Miss wide receiver Deuce Alexander promised a “bloodbath” will happen between both teams. So the tensions are high for this SEC heavyweight battle, including tightened security.
