College Players to Watch: Week 2

The Saints showed on Sunday that there are still some areas they need to improve. Here are some college prospects to keep an eye on going into the Week 2 matchup who could be making major strides early this football season.

DB is a position where you can never have enough talent. KJ Bolden is a name that should always stay on the radar. This nickel/safety is very versatile and is a key contributor in a Kirby Smart defense, so he should transition into the NFL very well. Bolden and the Bulldogs will be playing against Arkansas at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Tae Johnson is another safety with size and range. Johnson plays for Notre Dame and will be facing off against Michigan State on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.

Ty Benefield is a fast-rising safety at LSU. He is very experienced, but he is also a first-off-the-bus type of defender. Not only does he look the part, but he can play multiple positions across the secondary. He can play down in the box, deep off the ball or even in the slot. Benefield will be in Oxford taking on the Rebels on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Linebacker is another position group on the defense that needs to be watched as well.

Sammy Brown is a name that should be remembered. Brown is a physically gifted linebacker who can cover every single blade of grass and does not have to come off the field on third downs. Brown will be playing against North Carolina on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Chris Cole is another name to watch for Georgia. Who wouldn’t want a linebacker coming out of Georgia? Cole has length at the position and can affect the passer in pass-rushing situations, but he’s not just a pass rusher. He can still play traditional linebacker as well. Georgia is playing Arkansas, so you can get a two-for-one by watching this game.

We talked about cornerback last week and went over Leonard Moore. Here are two other names to watch out for.

Ellis Robinson IV, yes, another Georgia Bulldog. Robinson is a long, rangy, athletic corner. He can hold his own in press-man situations and cover zones very well. Again, he plays in a Kirby Smart defense.

Kelley Jones at Mississippi State is probably the best player on the defense, if not the team. His frame and athleticism started to showcase themselves near the end of last season, and if he follows that up with another good year, expect him to shoot up NFL Draft boards. Jones will have a good matchup on Saturday against South Carolina with Nyck Harbor and LaNorris Sellers at 3:15 p.m.

The offensive line did not look that good in the game against Detroit, so here are two names to watch for this week.

Trevor Goosby and Jordan Seaton are both star tackles with elite size and athleticism who are also great pass protectors. Goosby plays for Texas, and the Longhorns will be playing against UTSA on Saturday at 7 p.m. Seaton plays for LSU and will be with Benefield in Oxford facing off against the Rebels at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
