GAME THREAD: Washington State welcomes in Duquense

Happy Cougar Football Saturday, everybody!

Your 0-2 Washington State Cougars are finally back home in Pullman for their Week 3 Home Opener against the Duquesne Dukes.

To say Washington State needs to impress today would be an understatement. They’re coming off a really underwhelming effort against Kansas State where the offense didn’t score at all and netted just 166 total yards. Jaylen Thomas came away with two interceptions, including one that he housed at the first-half buzzer to keep WSU in the game and wound up being the only points scored by the Crimson and Gray.

WSU coming into this game 0-2 isn’t too much of a surprise given the strength of their first two opponents. Coming into this game with just 17 total points is a bit more of a surprise.

This afternoon they get an FCS opponent in Duquesne that has been outscored by Air Force and Youngstown State in their first two games, 104-13. Bill Connelly from ESPN has Duquesne ranked 101st of 128 FCS teams. In his ‘Top 771’ ranking, which features teams from Divisions 1, 2 and 3, as well as NAIA, he has Duquesne ranked 294th. WSU is ranked 101st in that ranking.

It doesn’t matter how bad WSU’s offense has looked in the first two games; this is a game they shouldn’t have much difficulty moving the ball. Defensively, they should dominate. If they can’t, well, the conversations are going to get really ugly.

Now I don’t expect WSU to win a billion to nothing. But I would be underwhelmed if they scored less than five touchdowns.

Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. and televised on the USA Network.
