Rutgers Falls Short 42-35 in Hard Fought Battle Against No.12 USC

Rutgers football came up just short, 42-35, against No. 12 USC in what was their best-played game of the season so far. However, despite the Knights’ efforts, USC’s offensive firepower proved to be too much for the Scarlet Knights to handle, especially when the Trojans were gifted points due to inconsistent quarterback play from Rutgers.

Rutgers found themselves in a 10-point hole early, after allowing a field goal on USC’s opening drive and surrendering a touchdown after an interception gifted the Trojans good field position. The Knights would score 14 points before the end of the half, with USC adding 10 more to keep a 20-14 lead heading into halftime.

A total of 28 points were scored in the third quarter, with USC running back a 99-yard pick-six and adding a touchdown on offense later on. Rutgers would score two touchdowns as well to keep the deficit at seven heading into the fourth. After both teams turned the ball over on downs, USC added one more score before Rutgers responded with their own. However, the Knights were unable to get the stop they needed at the end of the game as USC emerged victorious.

Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan looked better this game than in his previous game against UMass, but his mistakes once again proved costly, essentially spotting the Trojans 14 points. In total, Lonergan completed 18 out of 36 passes for 252 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also ran the ball six times for 26 yards.

Wide receiver KJ Duff and running back Antwan Raymond once again proved why they are some of the best players at their position in the country, as Duff recorded seven catches for 86 yards and a touchdown while Raymond added 122 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries on the ground, while adding three catches for 39 yards through the air.

The offensive line looked better than it has in games past, allowing only one sack and opening up some holes for Raymond to run through.

The defense struggled mightily to contain USC’s high-powered offense. Trojan quarterback Jayden Maiava recorded 277 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air, while adding nine yards on three rushes on the ground. USC’s rushing attack proved lethal against the Knights as well, as the Trojans totaled 31 carries for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

The quarterback and defensive problems still reared their ugly heads; however, the team had a much different look this game and played it all out on the field against an opponent who was a heavy favorite. The Knights showed a bit of diversity in playcalling, adding several stunts on the defensive side of the ball, audibling at the line on offense and even calling a fake punt, which went for 40 yards.

Rutgers will be back in action on Friday, September 25 at 7 p.m. at home, as they are set to take on Howard. Live coverage for the game will be available on the Big Ten Network.
