‘Mike Elko Getting Exposed Without Jimbo’s Players,’ ‘Unacceptable’ — CFB World Reacts to Texas A&M’s ‘Program-Altering Loss’ vs. Kentucky

The Texas A&M Aggies looked ready to keep their early-season run rolling Saturday. Instead, the Kentucky Wildcats walked into Kyle Field and flipped their whole plan, handing the Aggies a big home loss.
The result soon turned the conversation toward Mike Elko and where the program goes from here. Before long, fans were taking their frustrations to social media.
CFB Fans Label Texas A&M’s Kentucky Loss a ‘Program-Altering’ Result
Kentucky stunned No. 9 Texas A&M 31-21, overcoming a 7-7 halftime tie with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter. CJ Baxter found the end zone twice during the surge, while quarterback Kenny Minchey finished 14-of-18 for 252 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover.
One fan pointed to the overall difference between the teams, writing, “Nothing flukey about it, you just let Kentucky come in here with a first-year coach and kick your [expletive]. They were more physical, better prepared, better coached. On top of that, the QB is actually worse than last year and can’t complete basic throws with any level of consistency.
“This falls squarely on the shoulders of Elko and his coaching staff. Still 9 more games to go, they’ll have to go back to the drawing board. Unacceptable place to be for a coach in his third season at Texas A&M.”
Another supporter focused on the bigger implications, writing, “This is a program-altering loss.”
The reaction also brought Elko’s roster-building into the discussion. Another fan asked, “Mike Elko getting exposed without Jimbo’s players huh?”
Elko succeeded Jimbo Fisher in November 2023 and has since reshaped Texas A&M’s roster through multiple recruiting classes and transfer additions, although several Fisher-era players, including Marcel Reed, Rueben Owens II and DJ Hicks, remain on the 2026 team.
The loss, therefore, led some fans to question what the program looks like under Elko’s direction.

The AP ranked the Aggies No. 9 entering the game, and they fell to 2-1 after the defeat. Kentucky improved to 2-1, giving the Wildcats their first road win under first-year coach Will Stein.
Questions extended to nearly every area of Texas A&M’s performance. One fan wrote, “This team is a bad look for Elko. Every position group has regressed.”
The Aggies produced 423 total yards but committed two turnovers, both interceptions by Marcel Reed, who also rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown.
Offensive and defensive coaching drew separate criticism from another fan. “’Hire from within,’ they said. OC is bad. Elko got COOKED on defense too…” the fan wrote.
The defense became another major concern after Kentucky scored three touchdowns in the third quarter. One reaction focused specifically on coverage issues: “The number of busted coverages in Elko’s Year 3 defense is just not acceptable.”

Texas A&M rallied in the fourth quarter, but Kentucky answered with a 52-yard field goal and an interception of Reed on the Aggies’ next possession. Reed later threw a touchdown pass to Micah Riley, but Kentucky held on for the 31-21 win.
