College Football Hot Seat: Mike Norvell, Shane Beamer, and Ryan Silverfield Headline Week 3’s List

As college football wraps up Week 3 of its regular season, several coaches across the country find themselves in the hot seat, and it may be only a matter of time before changes are made at certain programs.

Between upsets, blown leads, and playoff hopeful teams not looking the part, take a look at these four college football coaches who find themselves in this week’s hot seat.

Mike Norvell, Florida State

There might not be a seat hotter in college football than Mike Norvell’s with the Florida State Seminoles. Just three weeks into the season, FSU finds itself 1-2, and while they have a tune-up game against Central Arkansas next week, the schedule that follows may just be the end of Norvell’s Seminole tenure.

With three conference opponents on their schedule for October (Virginia, Louisville, Miami), Florida State doesn’t look like a team ready for an ACC gauntlet of this caliber, and a losing stretch for the Seminoles could be the final nail in the coffin for Norvell in Tallahassee.

Week 3 certainly did Norvell no favors. FSU looked competitive against No. 10-ranked Alabama. However, the Seminoles once again lost momentum in a 50-36 loss. Had a win been picked up, it certainly would have cooled down Norvell’s hot seat.

Shane Beamer, South Carolina

Just when fans thought South Carolina was going to be firing on all cylinders against Mississippi State, the only thing the Gamecock fanbase wants to fire following a blown 16-0 lead is Shane Beamer.

During the late stages of the contest, “Fire Beamer” chants erupted from the Gamecock stands as fans made it very clear how they feel about their current head coach. This loss puts Beamer at 2-10 in his last 12 games against Power Four opponents, and the South Carolina program seems to be as stagnant as it can get.

The buyout for Beamer is pretty steep on the Gamecocks’ end if they want him out this season. He commands a $27.9 million buyout before December 31, which then drops to $22.1 million on that date. Still, if losses keep piling up for SC, the program may be prepared to cut its ties and take the nearly-$30 million buyout on the chin.

Ryan Silverfield, Arkansas

It’s wild to say, but just two games into his Arkansas tenure, Ryan Silverfield may be on the way out if the Razorbacks can’t find a way to not only score the ball but also secure a win.

Sure, both of Arkansas’ losses came at the hands of ranked opponents, Georgia and Utah. However, being outscored 88-27 across two games is just unacceptable by any standard, especially for a team like the Razorbacks, which not only plays in the SEC but also has a wide range of NIL donors.

While it’s rather unorthodox for a coach to lose their job so early in the season, if the Razorbacks don’t see a change with Tulsa, Texas A&M, and Tennessee on the schedule, Silverfield just may be packing his bags before he completes a full season.

Dabo Swinney, Clemson

Clemson picked up a decent comeback win against Bill Belichick’s UNC Tar Heels in Week 3, but that does not mean Dabo Swinney is out of the hot seat this week.

Through three weeks, Clemson’s offense has been off to an egregious start, including a quarterback switch that fans were prepared for even before the season began, which is never a good sign for the future of your program.

In their Week 3 matchup, the offense could not find the end zone until the second half, continuing the Tigers’ struggles this 2026 campaign. While Clemson fans may not want to accept it because of how decorated Swinney’s resume is during his tenure with the program, it may be time for a new chapter.
