Takeaways as Iowa football crushes Northern Iowa in shutout fashion

That's how you handle business against an FCS opponent.

No. 20 Iowa jumped on Northern Iowa early and never looked back, ultimately walking away with a 55-0 win. The Hawkeyes wrap up nonconference play 3-0, with a huge game against Michigan looming next weekend. Kirk Ferentz's team did everything right in this game, dominating in all three phases to leave no doubt.

There were offensive fireworks, defensive highlights, and a lot of celebrating inside a sold-out Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.

What did we learn from Iowa's big win over UNI? Here are the biggest takeaways from the Hawkeyes' shutout victory over the Panthers.

Hank Brown's perfect day

Usually, the word perfect is never applicable in the world of sports. Hank Brown's performance on Saturday was as close to perfect as you'll get. He led five straight touchdown drives to open the game before Jeremy Hecklinski came in. The fourth-year signal caller went 12 for 12 passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns. He made the right reads, delivered accurate balls, and distributed the wealth.

With Big Ten play starting next weekend, it looks like Brown has won the quarterback battle. He should be the starting quarterback for Iowa at the Big House next Saturday. There have been ups and downs this season for Brown, but he's earned the starting job. He was excellent against UNI.

Running game bounces back

Iowa struggled to run the ball against Iowa State last weekend. They got the win despite those struggles. The Hawkeyes' ground attack bounced back in a big way on Saturday. Iowa rushed for an incredible 422 yards against UNI. They averaged 10.3 yards per carry and found the end zone six times on the ground. Iowa did that without Kamari Moulton and LJ Phillips Jr., which makes it even more impressive.

Xavier Williams had six carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Former walk-on Braeden Jackson had 11 carries for 125 yards and a score. And Nathan McNeil added 12 carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Iowa's running back room is deep and talented. And shoutout to the offensive line. After struggling last week, that unit was utterly dominant on Saturday.

Defense deserves some love, too

While the offense gaining over 600 total yards will be the main headline from this game, Iowa's defense deserves a lot of credit too. That unit pitched its second shutout of the season. They've allowed 13 total points and one touchdown through three games thus far. After losing a lot of talent from last season, Phil Parker's group has looked like the usual elite Iowa defense.

Cam Buffington had a pair of tackles for loss in this game. Jacob Wallace and Rashad Godfrey Jr. picked up their first career interceptions. And the Hawkeyes were in the backfield all game long, despite snagging only two sacks. This unit is firing on all cylinders heading into conference play.

The season begins now

Iowa did what it was supposed to do in nonconference play: win out. Now at 3-0 entering the Big Ten slate, the Hawkeyes' 2026 season truly begins. These next three games against No. 19 Michigan, No. 6 Ohio State, and No. 24 Washington will determine if Iowa is a College Football Playoff contender or not. All three of those teams are great, but have shown cracks this season. There will be opportunities for Iowa to win these games.

It's not often that a team's season is decided by mid-October. In Iowa's situation, that will be the case. If the Hawkeyes are sitting at 4-2 or better in three weeks, everything is in their control. This team has played well in nonconference play. Now it's time to translate that success into big-time conference games. For all intents and purposes, the 2026 season officially starts next week in Ann Arbor.
