The much-anticipated LSU-Ole Miss matchup ended with Lane Kiffin’s Tigers falling 32-24 to his former team.

The defeat exposed several concerns for LSU and also put Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry on the receiving end of criticism from college football fans after the lofty expectations for the Tigers throughout the offseason.

Jeff Landry Faces Fan Backlash After Lane Kiffin’s LSU Falls to Ole Miss

Landry previously confirmed that he was involved in the discussions surrounding Brian Kelly’s firing, saying at the time that he was “tired of rewarding failure in this country.”

He also played a role in the process that ultimately brought Kiffin to LSU. While Landry had questioned the financial commitment tied to Kelly’s contract, LSU ultimately committed even more money annually to Kiffin.

The Tigers handed their new head coach a seven-year, $91 million contract and significant resources to reshape the roster, but, alas, they still couldn’t beat Ole Miss.

Following the loss, Landry congratulated Ole Miss in a post on X, adding to fans’ frustration.

“Congrats to Ole Miss, great game! Thanks for the hospitality! See y’all in Death Valley next year!” Landry tweeted.

Landry is far from the first Louisiana leader to take an active interest in LSU athletics, but fans began turning their frustration toward him after an offseason filled with hype surrounding the Tigers.

“Time to get back to your real job,” one X user wrote, adding the message in all caps.

“$90 million of your state’s funds went towards this 🤣🤣,” another commented.

“Imagine going to an away game on your taxpayers’ dime and losing,” a person said.

“Fix your roads instead of funneling money to LSU!!” another user said.

The criticism also came as Kiffin’s record against highly ranked opponents became a talking point following the loss. He is now 1-18 all-time when trailing by 10 or more points against a ranked opponent.

Saturday’s loss also dropped Kiffin to 13-26 against Top 25 opponents. His road record against Top-10 opponents fell to 1-9, further fueling criticism of LSU’s decision to make such a significant financial commitment to its new coaching staff.

“A lot nicer…. An L can humble a guy. Kiffin never could win the big games. Great hire!” one X user sarcastically wrote.

With that loss, LSU’s SEC title game odds have now fallen from 30.5% to 15.4%, and their Playoff odds have dipped from 73.8% to 59.9%, per PFN’s CFB Playoff Meter.

The Tigers now sit at 2-1 and will have the opportunity to respond when it faces Texas A&M on Sept. 26.
