County football roundup: Cougars win first game of season; three others pick up wins

Canadian picked up its first win of the season while Hartshorne, Quinton and Wilburton continued their winning ways in Week 3 of football action.
Canadian 40, Afton 34
The Cougars downed Afton in overtime for its first win of the season.
Canadian ran 62 plays on offense, all of which were run plays. The Cougars ran for 404 total yards of offense with six touchdowns.
This is Canadian’s first season playing 11-man football and lost its first two games of the season before breaking through the barrier Friday.
Wilburton 22, Panama 7
The Diggers’ balanced attack on offense kept their winning season alive against Panama Friday.
With 165 rushing yards and 135 receiving yards, Wilburton maintained its goal of spreading the ball around to all its offensive weapons. Quarterback Roman Brinlee was 11-for-20, passing for 135 yards and a touchdown.
Sam Bambeck led the ground game going for 119 yards on 12 carries. Kolby Valenzuela had 45 receiving yards on three catches, which led the team.
Valenzuela also had two sacks in the game. He, along with Jose Martinez’s sack, made up the three total sacks for Wilburton.
Valenzuela led the defense in tackles with 14. The next most tackles came from Eric Jimenez, who had 11. Evan Forwoodson, Drey Franklin and Jax Taylor each had a fumble recovery.
Hartshorne 61, Kansas 7
The Miners blew out the Comets on the road last week, continuing their impressive season.
Hartshorne’s big offensive night showed on the stat sheet. The Miners had a combined 594 total yards of offense with 360 coming on the ground and 234 through the air.
Quarterback Raider Schoggins had his best night passing of the season so far, going 6-for-11 with 234 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Schoggins also garnered 70 rushing yards.
Schoggins’ top target was Deegan Burke, who caught two passes for 127 yards.
Quinton 50, Crossover Prep 0
The Savages picked up their second straight shut out Friday against Crossover Prep.
Quinton entered the game off a 52-0 win over Keota the week prior and kept it alive Friday on the road. This is the third game out of four in which the Savages scored 50 or more points.
Quinton has won each of its four games by an average of 51-6. The Savages will see 2-1 Sasakwa this Friday.
Savanna 18, Wetumka 48
After defeating Wilson-Henryetta 50-0 in the first game of the season, the Bulldogs have now lost two straight.
