Stockdale football wins first game since October 2024

The Stockdale High football team travelled to play Antelope Valley for a non-league game and returned with a 39-18 victory, the program’s first win since Oct. 18, 2024, a 21-19 win over Ridgeview.

“It meant a lot for me, but it meant more for the players,” Mustangs head coach Chad Dials said. “I was extremely excited for them. They have worked hard and stayed through this rebuilding process.”

In 2025, Stockdale’s victory in a 1-9 season was the result of a forfeit win against North.

In 2026, Stockdale put together a strong second half with 26 points after a 13-12 halftime lead and intercepted Antelope Valley quarterback Marco Silva three times, including one for a Valentino Nunez touchdown. Johnny Burgos and Titus Miller had the other two interceptions.

“We changed some of our practice layout and I think that had an impact on how we approached the second half,” Dials said. “I reminded them they needed to focus on executing in the second half so the feeling they had at halftime would remain the same after the game ended.”

Dials praised his offensive line, which helped Stockdale get 303 rushing yards overall. Benji Odlin ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and Zack Walker had 135 all-purpose yards and a score.

“Our run game was awesome,” he said. “Our offensive line has been great all year, but they really dominated on Friday. Benji and Zack cashed in on the line’s superb play.”

Stockdale (1-4) gets a bye week to both celebrate and work hard with South Yosemite River League play starting Friday, Oct. 2 at home against Frontier, which is 0-5 this season.

Wasco 33, Fresno-McLane 26: The Tigers were able to get their first win of the season, improving to 1-4, with a solid performance from the offensive line to help quarterback Joe Montanez (2 TD passes, 1 rushing TD), receiver Moroni Carranza (2 TD catches) and running back Aiden Hulsey (130 yards, two TDs) be productive. The defense gave up a score on the game’s last play to make the score a bit closer than what it was, but Wasco Coach Kyle Wedel was happy to get the win and get back to work during the bye week to start preparing for the South Sequoia League opener against Delano. “We have one of the tougher leagues around,” he said. “We had a tough preseason and we think it can do wonders. The players truly want to win and that’s why I’ve been frustrated with myself and losing because our boys are right there, but they just need to play four quarters a little more consistently. They’ve stayed together and Friday’s win showed that.”

Tehachapi 22, Bishop Union 9: Down 7-0 at halftime, Tehachapi Coach Kris Krempien’s team scored all of its points in the second half on rushing touchdowns by Kyle Shipp, Daniel Lambrecht and Storm Marquesen — Shipp and Lambrecht each ran for a 2-point conversion, too — to get its first win (1-4). “This was definitely a win we needed to create some momentum going into the bye week,” Krempien said. “We continued to make mistakes that have hurt us all year long in the first half, but they answered the call at halftime and played a much cleaner and efficient second half. I love the way we played complementary football and closed out the game in the fourth quarter.” The Warriors’ point total exceeded what they amassed in the first four games. Tehachapi was shut out twice and had 19 points total. Tehachapi has had one of the toughest preseason schedules around with Garces, Shafter, R.F. Kennedy and Ridgecrest Burroughs, who have a combined 12-4 record. “This team has really stuck together through some difficult times,” Krempien said. “All of our preseason opponents were really tough, and despite the result of every game, our kids have shown up and competed each and every week.”

Bakersfield 49, Tulare Union 27: The Drillers remained undefeated at 4-0 — three wins have been on the road — with a victory over the Tribe. It was another four-touchdown game for Damir Lomax as he scored three rushing touchdowns and also had a kick return for a score. Lomax now has eight rushing touchdowns and this was his second kickoff return for a touchdown. Damariae Lee added two scores and quarterback Elon Mackey also rushed for a touchdown. Tulare Union fell to 2-2. Bakersfield, which will be in action this Friday at home against Independence when many other local teams are on a bye week, maintained its No. 2 ranking in the CIF Central Section with the victory behind Fresno’s Central East.

Garces 34, North 0: Another solid night for Garces quarterback Mark Gomez, who was 11-of-19 for 195 yards and three touchdown passes as the Rams improved to 4-1. They’ve won four straight after a season-opening loss to Santa Maria-St. Joseph. Carter Hanson ran for 105 yards and a score and Colby Dilly had a rushing touchdown and caught four passes for 76 yards and another touchdown. Treson Wallace and Isaiah Flores also each had one receiving TD. Defensively, Garces has two shutout wins and has allowed 50 total points in five games. North, which started the year with back-to-back wins, dropped its third straight game — Ridgeview and Northgate are the others — and has given up 107 points.

Highland 50, South 7: The Scots received a strong all-around game from multiple players, notably RJ Davenport who rushed for 103 yards on two carries, caught three passes for 78 yards and returned a punt 49 yards. He had three touchdowns, one each running, receiving and on the return. Anthony Phillips had 102 yards rushing, quarterback David Farrow completed 8 of 11 passes for 149 yards, one touchdown and he ran for two more scores as Highland improved to 3-2 at the expense of South (1-4). Defensively, Highland got interceptions by Frank Ybarra and Sergio Hernandez.

Boron 26, Kern Valley 18: The Bobcats ran for three touchdowns and quarterback Jaxon Carter, who plays linebacker on defense, ran a fumble recovery back for another score in a battle of former High Desert League foes. Boron (4-1) got a touchdown from Geordyn Rundblade (125 yards rushing), Malachi Rucker (118 yards) and Daxton Perkins (93 yards). Kern Valley quarterback Jackson Price threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score. Both of Price’s TD tosses went to Dakotha Taylor. The Broncs fell to 1-3 and will play at South on Friday night in what is a much smaller schedule due to the majority of local teams having a bye week.

Mira Monte 34, Rosamond 8: After an 0-2 season start, Mira Monte head coach Christian Johnson’s team won its second consecutive game, winning its home opener against the High Desert League’s Roadrunners, who fell to 2-3. The Lions scored in every quarter, while Rosamond avoided the shutout with a rushing touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

Tulare Western 41, Shafter 38: Quarterback Juju Hernandez threw for 475 yards on 38-of-53 passing and five touchdowns to help the Mustangs edge the Generals and send them to their first loss of the season. Tulare Western won the battle of undefeated teams and improved to 5-0. Shafter fell to 4-1. Generals quarterback Collyn Gillies threw for 216 yards on 9-of-26 passing and two touchdowns to Ossiel Villanueva who had five catches for 98 yards. Alex Reyna had two catches for 81 yards. Gillies had two rushing TDs and Guillermo Verdugo ran for a score and on defense had an interception and a fumble recovery.

East 34, Delano 14: Blades senior quarterback Maximus Hull completed 12 of 17 passes for 200 yards and a season-high five touchdowns as East improved its season record to 3-2 with a home victory against Delano (1-4). The Tigers got rushing touchdowns from Santi Perez, who had 80 yards, and Aidan Villarreal to account for Delano’s scoring. Tigers quarterback Antonio Trevino was 11-of-16 for 97 yards. East’s third win eclipses their 2-8 inaugural season under head coach Nick Romero in 2025.

Foothill 45, Del Oro 6: The Trojans remained undefeated at 5-0 and the Suns remained winless in a game between former South Yosemite Horizon League counterparts. Del Oro (0-5) is still in the SYHL and will be looking for its first win when league play begins in two weeks. Foothill, meanwhile, limited the Suns’ offense to 62 total yards and recorded two fumble recoveries, one interception and had four quarterback sacks. On offense, Foothill quarterback Ismael Ramirez threw for 92 yards and two scores and ran for a touchdown. Mike Hanks had a rushing TD, a punt return for a TD and had an interception. Cory Hunter had a receiving TD and also had a punt return for a score and Jordan Nielson had the other receiving TD, but also had three quarterback sacks and was credited with a safety.
