Navy vs Memphis Prediction: Can the Midshipmen Make the Title Game?

Memphis appeared to have the American Conference all to itself after a win over USF, but it tapped out of the race a few weeks ago with losses to Tulane and East Carolina, combined with a horrible loss to UAB.

It had a few weeks off to get ready for the regular season finale, and now its job is to ruin Navy’s dream of winning the conference title.

The Midshipmen got past a rocking from Notre Dame to slip past USF two weeks ago, and now at 6-1 in the conference, with the lone loss to North Texas, it’s still alive.

To get in, it needs to win and hope for a North Texas loss to Temple or a Tulane gag against a horrible Charlotte team.

The last two parts of that would require a minor miracle, but at the very least, it can take care of its own business on Thanksgiving and then hope for the best.

Why Navy Will Win

The Memphis defense hasn’t had too many problems throughout the season against the run, but it’s been hammered by the teams that can do it.

Arkansas and South Florida didn’t have any problems, and UAB pulled off the shocker with everything working, including the ground game.

Navy has a downfield passing game, but its bread is still buttered by leading the nation in rushing and controlling the clock and the tempo. However …

Why Memphis Will Win

When Memphis loses, it’s usually because the pass defense is totally awful.

Tulane and East Carolina bombed away at will, but that’s not quite what Navy does. It’s great at connecting on big plays when it has to, but it’s job is to run and keep running.

The Midshipmen will get their yards. Memphis has to get its own offense going and make Navy press. How did Navy lose to Notre Dame and North Texas – besides those two being the better teams? The star quarterbacks fired at will.

Notre Dame’s CJ Carr and UNT’s Drew Mestemaker combined to connect on over 80% of their passes. Memphis’s Brendon Lewis has been fantastic over the last few weeks – he’ll go off in this if he gets time.

Navy vs Memphis Prediction, Betting Lines

The USF win was the big moment for Navy. That was when it finally came up with a strong win over a good team, and now it has to be sharp and hope for the best to stay alive for a possible College Football Playoff shot.

It’s not going to change what it does.

The Midshipmen will throw well when they need to, but the interior of the Memphis line will hold up against the run, Lewis will be terrific, and the Tigers will pull out a wild shootout that should be the most fun football game of the day.

(Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.)
