Michigan football has lost two straight games, and quarterback play has been a major issue. Bryce Underwood has struggled, but Michigan is sticking with Underwood as QB1 this week.
Now, head coach Kyle Whittingham is explaining what is wrong with his quarterback, speaking with Tina Nguyen of WXYZ Detroit.
“Well, it’s a new offense for him. You can’t, you know, it can’t be a crutch or an excuse, but there are a lot of reads that need to be made in this offense, a lot of RPO aspect to it, which means there’s going to be not only reads in the throw game but in the run game, and those reads are critical to the success of the offense. We just got to continue to work on making the correct reads in those situations,” Whittham said.

The crux of the issue seems to be the inability of Underwood to read the defense, something Ari Wasserman of On3 pointed out when watching the interview.
“Here is a video of Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham basically saying QB Bryce Underwood is struggling to read defenses. It’s Oct. 13, and it’s year 2 as a starter for Underwood,” Wasserman pointed out.
Wasserman has some validity to his comments. While Underwood is young, he now has 18 games of experience under his belt. Meanwhile, he has just five games in the Jason Beck system, and there are other issues at play. One of those is the read option. Savion Hiter has struggled with the mesh point on the RPO plays, leading to Hiter snatching the ball from Underwood and being dropped for a loss. Still, that is not every play.
Underwood has completed just 59.3 percent of his passes for 881 yards and five scores. Still, he has four interceptions this year, and he has lost two fumbles.
Michigan looks toget back in the win column on Saturday as they host Penn State.
