A lesson for Arkansas' next athletic director

The 2025 Arkansas football coaching search might have delivered Ryan Silverfield to Fayetteville even if certain details had been different. However, we can't know that for sure. A new story from Best of Arkansas Sports offers details which should make Hog fans furious:

"One major complicating factor in the coaching carousel was the neck-and-neck race for the league title. In the end, it was Sumrall’s Tulane and Morris’ North Texas in the AAC title game, with the Green Wave coming out on top in a de-facto play-in to the College Football Playoff. All four coaches were hired in late November, before the Dec. 5 clash, but were allowed by their new employers to finish the season with their current school. For Sumrall, that meant double duty through January as Tulane went to the CFP.

Silverfield, meanwhile, did not have to worry about the AAC title after Memphis, following an 8-1 start, lost its final three regular-season games. In fact, he infamously never appeared in a conference title game during his six-year tenure, despite the Tigers’ expansive NIL budget. You know what they say: availability is the best ability. According to 103.7 The Buzz’s Rick Schaeffer, that seems to have been a major draw for Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek, and likewise, a dealbreaker for multiple other candidates.

"'[Silverfield] was available as soon as the regular season ended,' the former longtime Arkansas sports information director said on Morning Mayhem. “There were other coaches that would have come if they would have been allowed to coach their team in either a bowl game or playoff game or whatever there was.'

"The Littlefield, Texas, native (Eric Morris) was reportedly interested in the job: it was an SEC opportunity near his neck of the woods, and he already owns three cotton farms in northeast Arkansas near his wife’s hometown of Rector. Schaeffer, a former Razorback sports information director, believes passing up on him was a mistake.

“'He would have come, but they couldn’t wait,' said Schaeffer, co-host of Drivetime Sports on the same station. 'I get that you want to recruit and all that kind of stuff. But if they had waited two or three weeks, they would have got him and they would have gotten the quarterback.'”

We don't know if Hunter Yurachek will be fired this year. He should be, but he might not be. At any rate, it seems safe to say that when another football coach is hired at Arkansas, Yurachek will not make that call. He has lost the right to do that another time. When the moment comes to hire another football coach, the lesson could not be clearer: Wait to get your guy. If you have to eat three weeks and lose some recruits, but you get a better coach who can bring his own QB in the transfer portal, you make that short-term sacrifice for the long-term benefit. 

Hunter Yurachek got impatient. He settled. He, not Ryan Silverfield, is the reason for this mess in Fayetteville.
