While recent comments by Purdue head coach Barry Odom suggest the series may not go on much longer, the upcoming matchup between Notre Dame and the Boilermakers is actually one of the most tradition-rich rivalries in history.

The matchup in West Lafayette will be the 90th matchup between the two programs. Another installment in the Battle for the Shillelagh Trophy. Purdue won the first game in the series, 28-22, on Nov. 14, 1896, but Notre Dame has dominated the matchups since then. The Irish lead the series 59-26-2 entering this weekend's game.

The programs began playing annually in 1946 and played through 2014. The rivalry paused temporarily when Notre Dame had to make scheduling adjustments due to the ACC. The teams did meet in 2021 and have been meeting annually since 2024, when Notre Dame won in dominant fashion, 66-7. Notre Dame also won the game in 2025 by a score of 56-30 at Notre Dame Stadium.

The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium and you can find the viewing info here.
