Texas A&M stock report, from Saturday’s game against LSU

Well, here we are again. Texas A&M is following up a successful season with a start that feels painfully familiar. Plenty of football remains, but a 0-2 start to SEC play is a deep hole. Instead of building toward another College Football Playoff run, the Aggies have to figure out how to reach a bowl game at the end of the season.

The Kentucky game now looks like a warning of what was coming in Baton Rouge. A&M had already struggled against Lane Kiffin’s teams in recent matchups, and getting blown out by his LSU squad made this loss even harder to take. The A&M-LSU rivalry has produced some rowdy games over the years, but Saturday night was never the fight Aggies fans hoped for.

LSU beat A&M in nearly every area to win 35-6. The Aggies managed just 197 total yards while allowing 506, and the offense failed to score a touchdown. A&M entered the season with questions about its quarterback, playcalling and defense. After the showing at Tiger Stadium, those questions grew.

Here is whose stock rose and fell against LSU. 

Stock up: Tyler White

A&M’s offense kept sending White back onto the field, and he kept delivering. His punts traveled well and repeatedly gave the defense a chance to work with better field position. It is never a good sign when the punter is one of the busiest players on the team, but White did his job.

Stats: 7 punts, 363 yards, 51.9-yard average, 58-yard long / 6 punts of 50-plus yards / 3 inside the 20.

Stock up: David Olano

Olano handled every opportunity, including a long field goal in the third quarter. With the offense unable to reach the end zone, the Aggies needed him to make those kicks just to put points on the board.

Stats: 2-for-2 on field goals (24 and 53 yards) / 3 kickoffs, all touchbacks.

Stock up: Rueben Owens

Owens found room when he got the ball and was A&M’s best option on the ground. His performance makes the lack of a sustained running game more frustrating. With the passing attack struggling, the Aggies needed to find more ways to keep him involved.

Stats: 11 carries, 62 yards, 5.6 yards per carry / 1 catch for 9 yards.

Stock Down: Marcel Reed

Reed needed a response after his uneven game against Kentucky, but he never looked comfortable against LSU. The protection broke down at times, though he also missed chances to keep drives alive. His decision-making and accuracy remain major concerns as A&M tries to recover from consecutive SEC losses.

Stats: 10-of-26 passing, 106 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception / 10 carries for minus-13 net

Stock Down: Holmon Wiggins

Wiggins could not find an answer once LSU took control. Owens had success on the ground, but the offense never established a rhythm or found a way to take pressure off Reed. The players have to execute, but Wiggins is responsible for finding an approach they can run consistently. That hasn't happened in two SEC games.

Offensive stats: 197 total yards / 91 rushing / 106 passing / 4-of-15 on third down / 0 touchdowns.

Stock Down: Secondary

LSU’s receivers found too much space, especially in the third quarter. Jackson Harris broke free for a long touchdown, and Winston Watkins Jr. repeatedly found room downfield. A&M struggled to stay with both of them when LSU pushed the ball through the air.

The coverage problems from the Kentucky game carried over to Baton Rouge. The secondary got little help from the pass rush, but it still has to do a better job of preventing the big plays that have hurt A&M in two straight SEC losses.

Stats: LSU completed 17 of 28 passes for 312 yards, two touchdowns and one interception / Harris and Watkins Jr. combined for 11 catches and 270 yards.
