Kirby Smart delivers honest assessment of Oklahoma after Georgia’s 41-13 win

Georgia outgained Oklahoma by 12 yards on Saturday, 308 to 296, and beat the Sooners by 28 at Sanford Stadium. Four Oklahoma turnovers turned a close statistical game into a 41-13 final and carried the No. 2 Bulldogs to a 4-0 start and a 2-0 SEC record.
“We like to have the saying ‘Dawgs don’t beat the Dawgs’. The Dawgs didn’t beat the Dawgs today. But the Sooners, in a lot of ways, beat the Sooners,” Kirby Smart said in his postgame news conference.
The line came in response to Chris Cole’s 85-yard fumble return for a touchdown, which pushed Georgia’s lead to 21-0. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer threw an interception and lost two fumbles, and those three mistakes led to 10 Georgia points, Cole’s score included.
“There’s forced fumbles, and then there’s gifts,” Smart said. “They gifted us multiple turnovers that could have been touchdowns and the game would have been different. So opportunistic, a little luck, but proud of Chris for running it back and KJ’s interception.”

Why Smart spent part of a 28-point win discussing a lull
Sophomore receiver Talyn Taylor caught four passes for a career-high 110 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown, and the Bulldogs led 28-0 at halftime. The third quarter then produced more Georgia turnovers than first downs. Quarterback Gunner Stockton threw his first interception of the season, one of two Bulldogs giveaways after the break.
“I think it’s always indicative of your halftime adjustments, what you’re going to do the second half, what kind of energy you have,” Smart said when asked about the second-half offense. “Are you, you know, are you complacent? Do you look at the scoreboard? I mean, if you’re going to be that way, it’s probably an alarm bell for upcoming games. Because if you’re going to be, you know, happy with where you are, then you’re not going to improve.”
“We didn’t convert a lot of our third downs today,” Smart said of a day when Georgia’s offense stalled on the money down. “I don’t know what it was, they were 2-of-14 and we were 3-of-12. Obviously, that’s not good. We’ve got to be better than that, and we can’t get in third and longs.”
“The scoreboard should never matter; we’ve got to play to our standard all the time, and we didn’t at times,” Smart said on the field right after the game. “I’m very proud of our guys, but we didn’t play the best game we could play.”
“We definitely had a lull, and good teams don’t have lulls,” Smart said, with Vanderbilt next on the schedule in Athens. “They don’t sleepwalk.”
