FSU elite athlete commit says he could be flipped by another school

For Florida State, one of the biggest challenges they've had lately is recruiting. That's because they only won seven games over the previous two seasons which has led to decommitments and underwhelming classes overall.

They've already lost multiple players in the 2027 cycle, including three-star tight end Connor Winn who decommitted on Tuesday. With that said, four-star athlete Za'Kari Johnson is one of the pledges that they want to keep the most, but he's being pursued by schools like the Miami Hurricanes and Auburn Tigers who he recently took visits with.

Per Zach Blostein of 247Sports, Johnson is still all in on FSU, but that could change at some point.

"Right now, I'm still with Florida State to the end, but somebody somewhere else could flip me," Johnson said. "You never know."

It's no secret that the future of head coach Mike Norvell is in serious jeopardy with how the team has performed since 2023. However, Johnson has built a strong bond with Norvell as well as safeties coach Evan Cooper.

If Florida State does have another disappointing season and they decide to move on from Norvell, Johnson will likely be looking elsewhere in terms of where he'll play on the college level.

"Yeah, it might, because I got a great relationship with Norvell," said Johnson. "He's actually one of the coaches that made me commit, him and Evan Cooper, so if they go, ain't no reason for me to be there, for real."

In addition to Miami and Auburn, the Texas A&M Aggies are also interested in Johnson, and now the Florida Gators have also entered the mix. When it comes to when Johnson will make his final decision, that may come sooner than later.

"I'm still figuring it out," Johnson said. "Everything's coming to an end real soon, though."

Johnson is set to take an unofficial visit to FSU this weekend when they take on the Virginia Cavaliers, and he'll also take an official on Oct. 31 when they battle the Clemson Tigers. They need to roll out the garnet and gold carpet for Johnson to remind him why he committed to the program.
