For 16 years, Iowa hadn’t beaten Michigan inside the Big House. That drought ended Saturday in about as dramatic a fashion as college football allows.
No. 17 Iowa knocked off No. 18 Michigan 20-19 on the game’s last play, a touchdown strike from quarterback Hank Brown to receiver Reece Vander Zee, according to ESPN. It was Iowa’s first win at Michigan Stadium since 2010, and it came in about the most nerve-wracking way possible in front of more than 111,000 fans.
How It Got There
Iowa’s night started with special teams doing the heavy lifting. Kickoff returner Braeden Jackson, son of former NFL running back Fred Jackson, returned a kick 99 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 7-7 in the first quarter.
From there it was a grind: Michigan led 10-7 at half and pushed the margin to 13-7 in the third quarter before Iowa grabbed a 14-13 lead early in the fourth. Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood answered with what CBS Sports called his best drive of the game to put the Wolverines back up 19-14.
That set up the final Iowa possession. According to CBS Sports’ Week 4 breakdown, Iowa drove to around Michigan’s 45-yard line before back-to-back incompletions under heavy pressure nearly stalled the drive entirely. A 15-yard penalty against Michigan on third-and-12 kept the possession alive, Time reported, and Brown found Vander Zee for the winning score as time expired.
What It Means
The result reshuffles the Big Ten picture in a hurry. With conference frontrunners Ohio State and Oregon already carrying a loss apiece, CBS Sports notes Iowa could easily crash the College Football Playoff conversation if it keeps this up.
The Hawkeyes improve to 4-0, and Iowa City is bracing for a marquee follow-up: ESPN’s College GameDay is heading there for next week’s home game against Ohio State, according to KRUI Radio’s recap.
For Michigan, the loss cuts deeper than one Saturday. CBS Sports called it a devastating blow to the Wolverines’ playoff aspirations, noting it removes any real margin for error heading into a brutal stretch of the schedule.
The Reaction
Social media lit up almost instantly. CBS Sports’ college football account posted simply, “Iowa shocks No. 18 Michigan, 20-19,” while Eleven Warriors, the Ohio State fan outlet, jokingly noted the win takes over even a wedding they were attending, a nod to just how widely the finish was being shared.
Kirk Ferentz’s team now heads into a Week 5 showdown with Ohio State carrying real national buzz for the first time in years.
Whether Iowa can back up the win against a ranked Buckeyes squad will say a lot about whether Saturday was a signature moment or a one-off.
