What we learned from Week 4 of college football in the Big Ten

Week 4 of the 2026 college football season is now in the books! And while it was a disastrous one for USC, there were numerous other Big Ten games played over the weekend as well.

So what did we learn from the rest of the conference? Here are a few non-USC takeaways from Week 4 in the Big Ten:

Michigan is the most bizarre team in the country

Three weeks ago, the Wolverines needed a touchdown with no time remaining to beat Western Michigan at home. Two weeks ago, they knocked off Oklahoma. Then this past week, Michigan was on the other end of a walk-off touchdown, as Iowa stunned the Wolverines 20-19 in Ann Arbor. At this point, Michigan feels impossible to figure out.

Maryland is truly horrible

Somehow, Lincoln Riley did not have the most miserable weekend of any Big Ten head coach. That honor belonged to Mike Locksley, whose Maryland team lost 54-3 to UCLA at home.

Wisconsin might be better than expected?

Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell was my pick to be the first Big Ten coach fired this season. So the Badgers’ 24-20 comeback win on the road at Penn State certainly caught me by surprise.

Washington will definitely be worse than expected

Going into the year, I thought that the Huskies were being somewhat overrated nationally. But even I did not envision them losing to Minnesota at home.

It will be another long year in East Lansing

Michigan State has not made a bowl game since 2021. The Spartans’ 31-13 home loss to Nebraska did nothing to suggest that will change this year.
