Kansas State Wildcats coach Collin Klein was dealt his first loss last week against the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big 12 conference opener.

While he struggled to deal with it, he can also take solace in some of his recent victories.

The latest was getting a commitment from linebacker/edge rusher Malachi Johnson for the 2028 class. Johnson made the announcement Wednesday via social media.

Here's what he wrote on X: With great gratitude, I’m excited to announce that I am officially committing to @kstate! Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey and helped me get to this point. I’m truly grateful for the support, guidance, and belief along the way."

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound is a top talent in the St. Louis area, playing at Lift For Life Academy. He has 28 total tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks during his junior season.

Klein can take a celebratory lap by landing Johnson over the Missouri Tigers, Kansas Jayhawks and Illinois Fighting Illini, all teams that recruit the St. Louis area well. This marks the second big commitment for the Wildcats' 2028 class in the past week.

On Sept. 21, they got a pledge from Taylen Washington, a star linebacker out of Derby (Kan.) High School. He is already rated a top five player in the state of Kansas.

It has been impressive the way Klein has not only hit the 2027 recruiting trail but also doing it for the following year. This will only help him place a stamp on the program, which he is already doing.

In his first season, Klein led the Wildcats to three straight victories to start the season. That was followed with the disappointing loss on the road to the Bearcats but at least Klein is already making strong recruiting inroads.
