Oakwood lost its starting quarterback, Alex Wallace, to a concussion and fell behind three touchdowns in the third quarter. A furious fourth-quarter comeback ensued, but the rally fell short when a two-point conversion run in the final seconds didn't reach the end zone.
Kyler Johnson rushed for 113 yards on 20 carries, Jaethan Perez caught five passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns to go with a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown and Nathan Young had four catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Backup quarterback Riglee Hart also completed all three of his passes for 94 yards and threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns. His 6-yard pass to Perez with 17 seconds left trimmed Oakwood's deficit to 28-27.
"I'm sure people have questioned me because the two-point conversion didn't work out, but we had all the momentum in the world at that point," Oakwood coach Cameron Lee said. "I trust Kyler as much as anyone to get us two yards, and I didn't want this game to go one play longer than it had to. We went for it, but it was a bobbled snap and exchange, and Kyler got tackled at the 1-yard line."
Hart is expected to get the start quarterback for the Comets against the Knights, with Wallace sidelined.
The way Hart handled himself in helping the Comets come back against Westville wasn't a surprise to Lee.
"Riglee is a competitor," Lee said. "We have depth at the quarterback position, which is rare for a 1A football team. We've told Riglee, 'It's just a matter of time. Keep engaged and keep focused because you're a good football player, but there's only one dude who can play that spot at a time.' He's a kid that has battled and stayed the course. Seeing him get in there and step up to match the moment was great."
On the flip side, containing ALAH dual-threat quarterback Marcus Otto is key for the Comets on Friday night. The Knights, who also rely on running backs Brennon Hutson, Jayden Parsons and Elijah VanScyoc, are averaging 52.8 points and have scored at least 42 points in every game so far this season.
"The complexity of their offense stands out," Lee said. "They have good athletes in a scheme that tries to confuse defense. They will test our discipline as a defense."
