THE ROAR: LSU jumps to big lead, downs McNeese in historic performance

The LSU Tigers had a good night at home to open the month of October as they welcomed McNeese to Tiger Stadium. After jumping out to a 49-0 lead, LSU put in their backups before finishing off the win 63-14.

HOW WE GOT HERE:

McNeese started the game with the football and was moving the ball well down the field, but a bad decision from quarterback Jake Strong led to an interception by Tamarcus Cooley and gave LSU the ball. The Tigers’ offense went 48 yards on nine plays before Dilin Jones added to his touchdown total from a yard out to make it 7-0 early. A few minutes later, the LSU offense once again moved down the field effectively, going 78 yards on 12 plays as Sam Leavitt found Roman Mothershed for a one-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 LSU lead.

In the second quarter, the Bayou Bengals would add to their lead as Landen Clark checked into the game and ran it in from three yards out to cap a 10-play, 47-yard drive and make it 21-0. Before the half ended, LSU would have two more scoring drives of 60+ yards that both ended with Corey Barber Jr. catching his first two touchdown passes as a Tiger from Leavitt as LSU went into the locker room leading 35-0.

LSU opened the third quarter with the ball, and once again, they weren’t done. The Tigers went 82 yards down the field and ended the drive with a touchdown run from freshman defensive lineman Deuce Geralds. Minutes later, Harlem Berry found the end zone, and the lead was extended to 49-0.

From there, the backups came in, and Jamaal “Speedy” Levi got to work for McNeese. He caught a quick screen pass from Brady Barbier and went 46 yards for the score. Then, after a quick punt from LSU, he took an end-around handoff 65 yards to the house to make it 49-14 quickly. Levi had 110 yards and two touchdowns in just three plays.

LSU opened the fourth quarter with a 49-yard touchdown run by Stacy Gage to extend the LSU lead back to 42 at 56-14.

On the next LSU possession, Gage made a beautiful cut in the second level and took off for a second touchdown as the Tigers offense eclipsed over 700 yards of production in this game. Berry and Gage each went over the century mark on the ground as the Bayou Bengals cruised to a 63-14 final score.
