Line: Syracuse chances at an upset have decreased over the week according to Fanduel’s odds. The Orange opened as +6.5 underdogs, but the line is now syracuse +8.5

First Meeting: Syracuse traveled down to Charlottesville for the first meeting between the two teams in November of 1975. The Orange easily handled the Cavaliers, winning 37-0.

Last Meeting: The Orange in 2022 opened the game taking a 16-0 lead into halftime before UVA took a one-point lead with 5:51 left in the game. With 1:14 left in the game, Andre Szmyt hit his fifth field goal of the game to give the Orange a 22-20 victory.

Head Coaches: Syracuse: Fran Brown (third year, 15-14) | Virginia: Tony Elliot (fifth year, 25-28)

Coach Bio: Elliott walked onto the Clemson football team as a wide receiver. He started his coaching career a couple of years after his playing career at Clemson with South Carolina State and Furman as a wide receivers coach. Elliott returned to Clemson in 2011 as a running backs coach before moving up to the co-offensive coordinator role in 2015. He was the primary offensive play caller for the Tigers from then on, including for Clemson’s two national championships in 2016 and 2018. Elliott moved to Virginia for his first head coaching job in 2022 after Bronco Mendenhall’s sudden and shocking leave from the program.

Last Year: Virginia had its most successful season under Elliot, finishing with a winning record for the first time. The Cavaliers stormed the field twice against No. 8 Florida State and went 10-2 in the regular season, enough for a trip to the ACC Championship. Virginia lost to Duke in overtime but defeated Missouri in the Gator Bowl. 

Last Game: Virginia couldn’t contain Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels. He rushed for five touchdowns, a Seminoles record for single game rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, as the Cavaliers fell 38-7.

“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Two offensive linemen from Virginia in tackle McKale Boley and guard Noah Josey made the All-ACC preseason team. However, tackle Monroe Mills is by far and away the highest rated starter on Virginia according to PFF with a 89.6 offensive grade.

If Syracuse Wins: The season might be saved?

If Syracuse Loses: I think the men’s lacrosse team will agree with me if the Orange just don’t visit Scott Stadium anymore. 

Fun Fact: After Syracuse’s game at UConn, over half the players that have featured for the Orange this year are underclassmen. 47 of the 90 players that have appeared on the gridiron for Syracuse this year are freshmen or sophomores.
