For a moment, it looked like Nebraska would get its signature win under head coach Matt Rhule.

The Cornhuskers had the momentum and led 17-6 with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter before the No. 7 Hoosiers took over. Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover hit wide receiver Nick Marsh for a 75-yard touchdown to make it a 17-13 game before Marsh scored again later in the fourth quarter to give Indiana a 20-17 lead.

Nebraska had a pair of chances to retake the lead or tie the game, but Indiana got the stops and improved to 6-0, 3-0 in the Big Ten. With the loss, Nebraska (5-1, 2-1) has dropped 31 straight games against ranked opponents, per CFB Kings on X. Ten of those losses have come since Rhule took over as head coach in 2023.

The fanbase was ready to explode on Saturday. Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium was packed, and fans wanted to celebrate a big win over the defending national champs.

What’s next for Nebraska?

However, that big win will have to wait until at least next week, when the Cornhuskers travel to face No. 13 Oregon on Oct. 17. It’ll also be an opportunity for the program to become bowl-eligible before playing some other ranked teams later in the year, including Iowa and Ohio State.

A kickoff time for next Saturday’s game against Oregon has yet to be announced.
