College Football Playoff to expand to 24 teams in 2027

The College Football Playoff is set to expand to 24 teams starting with the 2027 season according to reports that originated from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger earlier this week before being confirmed Thursday by ESPN reporters.

The recent jump in reports on expansion come in the wake of ESPN announcing that they are finalizing an expansion contract with the CFP. The most likely outcomes of new playoff expansion include the elimination of conference championship games, first and second round games on campus, a week off after the regular season, and a format which still includes just one guaranteed spot for the Group of Six.

The format as proposed creates an inequitable bottleneck in which 68 teams get to fight for 23 spots while 70 teams fight for the 24th spot instead of creating 10 spots for conference champions and 14 at-large spots for the remaining 128 FBS teams akin to every other team-sport championship in which these schools play.

The 2027 CFP will conclude with the 2028 College Football Playoff National Championship game at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
