ESPN College GameDay has revealed its guest picker for the highly anticipated Week 7 matchup between the No. 8 BYU Cougars and the No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
BYU legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young will join the college football pregame show on Saturday morning in Provo. Young's selection was announced Thursday afternoon on The Pat McAfee Show.
One of the biggest topics this week was which notable BYU figure would receive the honor of being on the set this weekend. Young will join the College GameDay crew of Rece Davis, Desmond Howard, Kirk Herbstreit, Nick Saban and McAfee to make predictions for some of the nation's biggest college football games. But there isn't one with more College Football Playoff implications than BYU and Notre Dame.
BYU has an impressive alumni base to pull from, including top NBA pick AJ Dybantsa, Jeopardy host Ken Jennings, basketball legend Jimmer Fredette and Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid.
Young will be a natural considering he spent over a decade with the network. During his standout BYU career, he earned first-team All-American honors and finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1983. His performance helped establish the Cougars as a national football power and cemented his place among the program's all-time greats.
Young went on to enjoy a legendary NFL career, primarily with the San Francisco 49ers, where he succeeded Joe Montana as the franchise's starting quarterback. He won three Super Bowls and captured the NFL's Most Valuable Player award in 1992. Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005. His impact extended beyond championships.
Young finished his NFL career with 33,124 passing yards and 275 total touchdowns, establishing himself as one of football's premier dual-threat quarterbacks. He helped shape the modern quarterback position.
Following his playing career, he became a familiar face in football broadcasting, serving as an analyst on ESPN's Monday Night Football from 2006 through 2023.
The selection also arrives as Young's legacy continues to receive recognition. CBS Sports recently ranked him No. 53 on its list of the 100 greatest NFL players in history, placing him among the most accomplished players the league has seen.
Now, Young returns to the spotlight as BYU prepares for one of its biggest games of the season. With the Cougars facing a second-ranked Notre Dame team, his appearance adds excitement to an already significant matchup.
BYU hosts Notre Dame on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
