The saga of Kentucky football star linebacker Alex Afari Jr. continued on Friday. After the NCAA won an appeal that forced him to miss the last two games, he has been granted another temporary restraining order, meaning he is once again eligible, and will play this weekend against Oklahoma.
Afari is a member of the 2022 class that seemed to get the short end of the stick when the NCAA switched to the five-in-five rule that included every active class except that one. A number players from across college sports went to court to seek relief, and Afari was originally allowed to play.
After slowly working into the rotation, Afari was terrific against South Alabama. He led the team with nine tackles and looked like the dynamic player who was integral to the defense over the past two seasons.
After the South Alabama game, his eligibility was revoked, and at a bad time for the Wildcats. They had multiple linebackers injured, and certainly could have used him, despite winning those games. Now, heading into a big game against Oklahoma, he's back.
What happens next? Who knows. The NCAA is sure to counter this ruling as well, and there's no way to predict how it all plays out. For now, though, he's back, and he'll be sure to see the field plenty on Saturday.
