If Notre Dame wants a shot at a big spot in the expanded College Football Playoff, Kirk Herbstreit believes it needs to build a better schedule.

Herbstreit joined Mike Greenberg on ESPN’s Get Up Friday morning to discuss recent reports that the CFP will expand to 24 teams for the 2027 season. Herbstreit explained that his biggest concern with expansion is college football turning into college basketball, where regular-season games matter less. To address that concern, Herbstreit wants programs to improve their regular-season schedules.

“Instead of each conference doing the scheduling, I think we need a national scheduling office that is in charge of getting games set,” Herbstreit told Greenberg. “So we have not only somebody that’s looking at each conference, but looking at the totality of the conference scheduling, and we gotta have better non-conference games. Now that you know you can get to 24, your ass better be playing real games against real teams to give fans and players games to get excited about.”

And yes, Herbstreit was referring to your ass, Notre Dame. While ESPN’s College GameDay is in Provo, Utah, for Notre Dame’s game at BYU this weekend, Herbstreit put the Irish on blast for making this one of only two true regular-season tests on their schedule.

“Notre Dame plays two games where they’re going to be challenged. This one, where they’re favored, and Miami at home,” Herbstreit said. “Think about what Alabama and Georgia and Ohio State and these teams with what they’re dealing with. That cannot continue. That’s an embarrassment and incredibly unfair.”

According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Herbstreit’s concerns about regular-season games and Notre Dame’s weak schedule will be addressed. Dellenger reported CFP expansion will require all Power 4 schools to play at least 10 P4 games. Additionally, Dellenger wrote, “Notre Dame is expected to increase its frequency of playing SEC and Big Ten schools as part of the 24-team expansion.”

Herbstreit singled out Notre Dame in his rant, but he also mentioned Indiana and the need for scheduling to improve for “a lot of teams.” Herbstreit’s commentary will likely draw pushback from Notre Dame fans, but he focused on the Irish because he’s calling their game against BYU this weekend.

Notre Dame was left out of the 12-team CFP last season, and fans widely condemned them for throwing a tantrum by declining to play in a non-CFP bowl game. If Notre Dame beats BYU this weekend, they’re on track to be a lock for the CFP. If they lose, their “embarrassment” of a schedule sets them up to make it harder to build a resume worthy of a playoff bid.
