Florida State coach Mike Norvell enters Saturday night’s rivalry game against Miami with his job security under increased scrutiny as the Seminoles try to stabilize their 2026 season.

Florida State enters the matchup 3-3 overall and 1-2 in ACC play after last week’s 44-20 loss at Louisville. The Seminoles led 14-0 before the Cardinals outscored them 44-6, intensifying questions surrounding Mike Norvell’s future. The program has not announced a coaching change, and Saturday night’s rivalry game vs. the Hurricanes will test the program more than any game this season.

On3’s Pete Nakos wrote Friday night in an article published on the outlet’s official website that the Miami game could carry major implications for Norvell’s job status, citing sources familiar with the situation.

“Board of Trustees chair Peter Collins has long supported Norvell and has pushed back on a midseason coaching change, sources have said. But in the last 24 hours, sources have signaled that a lopsided road loss to rival Miami on Saturday night could change that.”

The 45-year-old is in his seventh season at Florida State and has gone 4-15 in his last 19 ACC games. The Seminoles also have not won a road game since November 25, 2023.

The financial stakes remain substantial. Norvell’s buyout sits near $51 million, while sources have estimated the total cost of a coaching change, new staff and roster investment at roughly $100 million. A booster group has prepared for a possible fundraising campaign if Florida State makes a move.

The Seminoles need three wins over their final six games to become bowl eligible. They have a bye after Miami before hosting Clemson on October 31.

For now, Norvell remains Florida State’s coach, but Saturday’s rivalry game could determine whether institutional support lasts through the rest of the season.
