Quarterback Bear Bachmeier played a pivotal role in BYU’s victory, recording two rushing touchdowns while helping the Cougars take control during the first half. He completed 13 of his 18 pass attempts for 129 yards and consistently delivered key plays whenever the offense needed a spark.
The strong first-half showing provided Sitake’s team with a valuable cushion against an undefeated Notre Dame squad. However, the Fighting Irish refused to surrender, finding ways to cut into the deficit and make the contest increasingly competitive in the second half.
Notre Dame had one final chance to steal the victory in the closing seconds. Quarterback CJ Carr guided the Fighting Irish down the field, bringing them within six yards of the end zone with only a few seconds remaining.
Carr attempted to connect with Jaden Greathouse on the final play, but the pass fell incomplete without a defensive pass interference penalty being called. The decision immediately sparked controversy, as Notre Dame supporters believed the officials had missed a potential penalty on a play that could have changed the outcome.
The victory marked BYU’s first win over Notre Dame since 2004. The Cougars improved to 6-0 overall, preserving their unbeaten record with the hard-fought triumph.
Meanwhile, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell to 6-1 overall, suffering their first defeat of the season.
