Kalen DeBoer, Alabama Lose Key Player for SEC Championship Game

The No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide faces the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday in the SEC Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Georgia responded with back-to-back wins to end the regular season after a 23-21 loss to Oklahoma in Tuscaloosa.

Georgia has gone 11-1 this year, and the only loss for Kirby Smart‘s team came against Alabama on September 27 in a 24-21 final in Athens.

Now, the SEC rivals face off again, although both should make the College Football Playoff regardless of the result of this game.

On Wednesday night, both teams release the injury report just days before the game.

In the injury report, Alabama ruled out defensive tackle LT Overton in a bit of a surprise, per Charlie Potter of On3.

“Eleven Alabama players are on the initial SECCG availability report. LT Overton is out against Georgia. On Wednesday, Josh Cuevas and Jam Miller are both questionable.”

Here is the full report for both teams.

Overton was there for interviews on Tuesday, so his being ruled out is quite the surprise for Alabama. He spent the first two seasons with Texas A&M before coming to Tuscaloosa.

Overton is second on Alabama with four sacks, and he also has 33 tackles, so he has been a big part of the defensive line. In the Iron Bowl, he had two solo tackles and didn’t appear to be dealing with an injury.

Still, it’s a surprising turn of events to see him ruled out this early.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer will speak to reporters on Thursday, and there should be some clarity regarding the ruling of Overton.

Alabama faces Georgia on Saturday at 4:00 pm ET with the game being broadcast on ABC.
