Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 6 six times and have a 5-1 record.
In 2014, Tennessee defeated Arkansas State, 34-19, at Neyland Stadium.
The Vols trailed, 7-0, after Fredi Knighten scored a rushing touchdown. Tennessee led, 10-6, at the end of the first quarter after Aaron Medley converted a 20-yard field goal and Jalen Hurd scored a four-yard rushing touchdown.
Quarterback Justin Worley completed 22-of-38 passing attempts for 247 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Arkansas State. He also rushed for eight yards and one touchdown on six attempts.
Hurd was the Vols' leading rusher, totaling 83 yards and one touchdown on 23 attempts.
Von Pearson led Tennessee in receiving yards (71), while recording four receptions. Marquez North also had four receptions for 68 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
The Vols last played on Sept. 6 in 2025, defeating ETSU, 72-17, at Neyland Stadium. Tennessee first played on Sept. 6 in 1980 when it lost to Georgia, 16-15, at Neyland Stadium.
