Former Tennessee quarterback guides Concord Christian football to first playoff berth

In his second season as head coach for Concord Christian School football (Farragut, Tennessee), former Tennessee quarterback Steve Matthews guided the Lions to their first playoff berth in program history.
In its return to TSSAA-sanctioned football, Concord competed in the East Region of Division II-A in 2025. The Lions posted a 6-4 record (2-2 Division II-A East), and clinched a postseason berth with a, 49-13, victory over Grace Baptist Academy (Chattanooga, Tennessee).
Concord will play at Jackson Christian School (Jackson, Tennessee) on Friday. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. EST.
Matthews is a native of Tullahoma, Tennessee and played quarterback for the Vols from 1990-91 before transferring to Memphis.
He was selected in the seventh-round of the 1994 NFL draft by Kansas City (No. 199 overall). Matthews also played for Jacksonville and Tennessee in the NFL.
The former Vol served as Catholic’s head coach in Knoxville, Tennessee from 2013-2021. He guided the Fighting Irish to two state championships in 2015 and 2017.
