The Miami Hurricanes are reloading in 2026, and head coach Mario Cristobal looks to bring his team back to the College Football season for a second consecutive year. One reason why the Canes have a great chance to do so is their starting quarterback, Darian Mensah. 

Ahead of the 2026 season, Mensah transferred to Miami from Duke, but started his career before that at Tulane. 

Let's take a look at Mensah, what he brings to Miami and why he received a hefty NIL deal to play for the Canes.

Who is Darian Mensah? 

Darian Mensah is considered one of the top signal-callers in the country, but his career didn't necessarily start out that way. Coming out of high school in San Luis Obispo, Calif., 

Mensah was rated as a two-star recruit per the 247Sports Composite. He played high school football out of St. Joseph and was rated as the No. 161 overall ranked quarterback out of the class of 2023. Per his Miami bio, he threw for 2,256 yards as a senior with 25 touchdowns and eight rushing scores.  

Tulane was his only FBS offer, and he took a redshirt in 2023. But before the 2024 season, he earned the starting quarterback job and had a breakout year as a redshirt freshman.

He threw for 2,723 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 65.9% of his passes. He helped lead Tulane to an AAC title game, his team falling 35-14 to Army. 

He entered the transfer portal in Dec. 2024 and committed to play for the Duke Blue Devils a few days later.

Why did Dariah Mensah transfer to Duke? 

Mensah took the opportunity to play at the power-conference level after his big season at Tulane. According to reports, he reportedly signed a two-year, $4 million deal with Duke, which is important to keep in mind for later.   

With the Blue Devils in 2025, he had his best season yet, throwing for 3,973 yards—which led the ACC— with 34 touchdowns and six interceptions. He helped lead Duke to an upset over No. 17 Virginia in the ACC title game, giving the Blue Devils their first outright conference title since 1962. In the Sun Bowl, Mensah threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns while leading his team to a 42-39 victory over Arizona State.  

Although Mensah had reportedly considered entering the 2026 NFL Draft, he initially opted to return to the Blue Devils in mid-December. Roughly a month later, Mensah changed his mind again and instead opted to enter the transfer portal:

Darian Mensah-Duke lawsuit

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Mensah's contract with Duke granted the school the rights to use the quarterback's name, image and likeness, which would prevent him from signing another deal at a new school. 

Duke subsequently sued the quarterback in Durham County Superior Court to try and enforce the contract he signed with the school. Initially, Mensah was not able to enroll at another school until a judge responded to the suit, but a few days later it was settled by Duke and the quarterback. 

"Through close collaboration and principled negotiation, we have successfully navigated an unprecedented path, one that has now reached a fair and mutually agreeable resolution," Mensah's agency, Young Money APAA Sports, told ESPN in a statement.

Mensah committed to Miami shortly thereafter, with his reported NIL deal worth around $6.5 million to play for the Canes.

Why did Darian Mensah transfer to Miami? 

Miami and its head coach Cristobal have consistently relied on transfer portal quarterbacks to build around in recent years. It's worked out well for both the Canes and the quarterbacks themselves. 

Ahead of the 2024 season, Miami landed quarterback Cam Ward from Washington State. He threw for a career-high 4,313 yards with 39 touchdowns, leading Miami to a 10-win season.

He became the NFL's No. 1 overall pick in April of last year. Last season, Cristobal went into the portal again and snagged Carson Beck from Georgia. He threw for 3,813 yards with 30 touchdowns, while helping lead Miami to a national championship game berth against Indiana. 

Beck was drafted in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft this past April. 

"He understands football,” Miami quarterbacks coach Shannon Dawson said of Mensah via The Miami Herald last month. “He has come into a place and picked up the offense fast and that is a testament to him and his mental make-up. His football IQ is very high. He is very confident and secure about what he likes and what he doesn’t like. 

"I like that from a quarterback. Tell me if you don’t like something and I’m good with that. His football IQ is high and I don’t know if you can play in this system if it isn’t because there are so many moving parts. There is a lot of protection stuff, run game stuff, and movement. If you don’t have a high football IQ, it makes it tougher. His capacity is very high.”

Although there is apparently a debate at Mensah as an NFL quarterback per The Athletic's Dane Brugler, he can boost his draft stock with a big season in Miami. TSN's Vinnie Iyer has him as the No. 9 overall quarterback for 2026.
