If you didn’t know by now, Notre Dame football was jumped by Alabama in the latest College Football Rankings, putting some doubt into the Irish’s chances of being included in the 12-team field.

With Notre Dame having concluded its regular season, it meant that getting head coach Marcus Freeman before this weekend would be tough, but thankfully Wednesday was the early signing period for the 2026 class, and he took to the podium. While he did chat about the star-studded 27-man group, he was also asked about his thoughts on the CFP.

Freeman didn’t mince his words, saying that he “didn’t see a great explanation for why we fell when we had the performance we did last Saturday,” meaning the 49-20 drubbing of Stanford. The Crimson Tide needed a late touchdown to fend off Auburn, a Tigers team that didn’t even qualify for the postseason with just 5-wins on the year. Sure, the Cardinal have an abysmal record as well, 4-8, but it’s just one game behind Auburn and the Irish didn’t sweat their victory.

Like many across the country, it was questioned why Notre Dame got jumped by Alabama, and coach Freeman also doesn’t have an answer.
