What Gadsden City's Ty Sims brings to Jacksonville State football

Jacksonville State football got a signing day surprise when Gadsden City’s Ty Sims flipped his commitment.
Sims, who originally was committed to Mercer, announced his Jax State offer following the Western Kentucky game. Sims announced his flip to the Gamecocks during a signing ceremony at Gadsden City on Wednesday.
During his signing day press conference, Jax State coach Charles Kelly talked about the Gamecocks’ vision for the do-it-all standout.
“Ty, first of all when you talk about the definition of a football player, he does everything,” Kelly said.
Sims’ main position is defensive back, and it’s where Kelly, a secondary guy himself, sees Sims making the biggest impact. Sims made 35 solo tackles, to go with 29 assisted and seven for a loss. He added two interceptions and blocked five kicks.
His special team talent, coming around the edge, is something that could help allow him to make an early impact. He brings speed as well and could help as a returner. Sims added about 342 yards and four touchdowns on 52 touches.
“We’re going to play him at defensive back. He’s played every position in the secondary. He plays in the box, he plays in the slot, he’s played out wide,” Kelly said. He’s a very productive offensive player. He’s just a really competitive guy, very smart. He’s going to be able to pick up our schemes and what we’re trying to do real quick.”
Sims should early enroll with the Gamecocks ahead of the spring practice schedule as he will graduate from Gadsden City in December.
