The Florida Gators hired a former Georgia Bulldogs coach to their staff. Former Georgia quarterbacks coach and Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is Florida‘s new offensive coordinator, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Faulkner will look to rebuild the offense of new head coach Jon Sumrall’s team.

Faulkner coached at Georgia twice. After he finished his career as a college quarterback for Valdosta State and East Texas A&M, he got into coaching. His first stop was Valdosta State in 2005 as a student assistant, but then he went to Georgia to be a graduate assistant in 2006.

In 2007, Faulkner left the Bulldogs to be Valdosta State’s quarterbacks coach. He held various jobs as offensive coordinator/QBs coach for Valdosta State (2007-08), Central Arkansas (2009), Murray State (2010), Middle Tennessee State (2011-15), Arkansas State (2016-18), and Southern Miss (2019) before returning back to Georgia in 2020 to be the quarterbacks and offensive quality control coach.

With the Bulldogs, he was instrumental in turning Stetson Bennett from a walk-on prospect to a Heisman candidate. Georgia had one of the most explosive passing offenses ever. Georgia had the No. 4 passer rating in the country in 2021 and 2022, and Faulkner helped Georgia win back-to-back national championships.

Faulkner earned enough recognition to secure the offensive coordinator/tight ends coaching job at Georgia Tech. He helped quarterback Haynes King to become a Heisman candidate and give Georgia Tech their first nine-win season since 2016, although he was never able to beat his former team.

Now Faulkner will look to rebuild former five-star recruit DJ Lagway, who has had his struggles. Intriguing Georgia Tech backup Aaron Philo could potentially work with Faulkner if Lagway decides to transfer anyway. Regardless, Faulkner could give Florida a better shot at defeating Georgia for the first time since 2020.
