A potential candidate to be the next Michigan State football offensive coordinator is reportedly off the board.
According to a number of college football insiders, Toledo head coach Jason Candle is reportedly working to “finalize a deal” to be the next UConn head coach. This is notable for Michigan State for two reasons:
- Candle has been considered a candidate for the Spartans‘ vacant offensive coordinator position
- Michigan State opens the 2026 season against Toledo — who will now be looking for a new head coach
Candle has been the head coach at Toledo for the last 10 years, and has flirted with other jobs during that time but never left the Rockets. Now, it appears he is finally leaving Toledo and also closing the door on potentially joining Michigan State on Pat Fitzgerald’s new coaching staff.

Michigan State plays Toledo next season. Candle was also tied to potentially being an OC at Michigan State or Penn State as well was other HC opportunities. https://t.co/g28oBDeQhU
