What Kalen DeBoer said about Georgia football after SEC championship

Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer lost in his first ever SEC championship, 28-7, to the Georgia Bulldogs. DeBoer and the Crimson Tide have a silver lining because they made the College Football Playoff and will play the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners in the first round.

After the Georgia game, DeBoer spoke with the media about the Crimson Tide’s loss to UGA.

“Just got to credit, first of all, Georgia, what they did today,” DeBoer said. “You got two teams, congratulations to them, coach (Kirby) Smart, but you got two teams out there, know each other pretty well over the last two seasons, what the strengths are. Two teams that fight. Two teams that play hard. Got to this point, laid it out on the line.”

Georgia dominated Alabama in all three phases. The Bulldogs held Alabama scoreless for the first three quarters of the game and held Alabama to a negative rushing total. Georgia’s special teams blocked an Alabama punt and the Bulldogs scored four touchdowns on four red zone possessions.

“We gave them (Georgia) four short fields,” DeBoer said. “I don’t want to take anything away from what Georgia did. The field position battle is part of it.”

Georgia’s offense moved the ball throughout the night, but did not have a ton of explosive plays. The Bulldogs played a bit conservatively, but never drove the length of the field to have a scoring drive against the Crimson Tide.

On Georgia’s blocked punt

“I can tell you exactly what happened,” DeBoer said on Georgia’s blocked punt. “We got a new face in the spot. Obviously that’s LT Overton’s position. Just tell you what it is. There’s a check we got to make. You got a new face in that spot. That’s what happened.

“Again, getting guys more reps, getting guys back out there makes a big deal. I don’t fault our guys that were in that spot, doing everything they can. But there’s a check we got to make, one we make all season long. We missed it. They got an extra hat that we couldn’t block.”

Alabama defensive lineman LT Overton missed the SEC championship game along with several other injured members of the Crimson Tide, who had 10 players out against Georgia.
