Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck secured an at-large College Football Playoff bid for the Miami Hurricanes (10-2). They got the No. 10 seed and are set to face the No. 7 seed Texas A&M Aggies on the road on Dec. 20 at noon E.T.
Beck and the Hurricanes were in a strange spot in their playoff standing, unlike Beck’s former team. With losses to Louisville and SMU, they didn’t get to play in the ACC championship. Their 6-2 record in ACC games was worse than the Virginia Cavaliers (10-3), and they lost out to the Duke Blue Devils (8-5) through conference opponent record. Duke’s conference opponents had a .500 conference win percentage, while Miami’s had just a .438 conference win percentage.
The Hurricanes still had the upper hand against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2). They were ranked behind Notre Dame leading into conference championship weekend. However, the selection committee valued Miami’s head-to-head win against the Fighting Irish, and with the committee stating that idle teams could move, Miami jumped Notre Dame for the final playoff spot.
Beck plays the Texas A&M, a team he somehow never played against while at Georgia. This doubles as Beck’s first start in the playoff as well, since he suffered a season-ending elbow injury in the 2024 SEC championship.
There’s a chance that Beck could take on his former team in the playoff. If Miami wins against Texas A&M and defeats Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, and Georgia beats their opponent in the Sugar Bowl, then the Hurricanes and Bulldogs would play each other in the semifinals.
